Author: Tahereh Mafi

Rating: Would recommend to everyone in the world, will definitely re-read, learned a lot.

Tahereh Mafi is the type of author who could write her own version of the phone book and I would read it. This is her first contemporary novel, and she has said that it's the most autobiographical. The story follows a Muslim-American girl a year after 9/11 entering a new high school. Mafi does not hold back on revealing the type of bigotry, racism and ignorance she received during this time. But this story is so much more than that. It's a love story, it's a story about a girl finding her place through break-dancing (a true part of Mafi's past), and it's a story that should make everyone confront themselves with their own prejudices. While there were times I wished Mafi would dive even deeper into certain issues, I knew that this was also a story that needed to appeal to a larger amount of people so that it could get its points across. Loved every moment of this book, even the parts where I cried and felt uncomfortable with myself (absolutely necessary). Read it for enjoyment, but also read it to confront yourself.
